INDIA’S traditional heritage and culture will be deeply rooted into the concept and core design of the new Indian High Commission building in Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur.

Veritas Design Group president and chief executive officer David Mizan Hashim said the design embraces the evolving role of the modern diplomatic mission as a cultural emissary.

“It aspires to be a future-forward consulate that seeks greater engagement with the local community and host nation — beyond diplomacy, intelligence and trade.”

The essence of the layout lies in the “brahmastana” courtyard, an activity-charged open space carved into the steep topography of the site. The futuristic form of the Chancery facade folds into geometric pleats, alluding to the iconic stepwells of India.

The ceremonial facade of the Cultural Centre represents the rich traditional tapestry of art and culture integral to the Indian identity. The abstracted motif of the tree of life, first carved in relief on monumental stone, transitions over to the intricate tracery of a stainless steel Jaali screen that wraps around and defines the arrival atrium.

Veritas received the letter of appointment recently for the total design package to construct the building from Indian High Commissioner TS Tirumurti.

Tirumurti said Veritas was selected from among 10 short-listed submissions as the design was unique and contemporary.

“The new building will bring the three offices of the high commission — the Chancery, the Cultural Centre and the Residences — together in a flowing manner.

“There is open space and (this) gives the design an uplift. It was an unanimous decision as we could imagine the functionality of the design.”

He said the cost of the project is about RM35 million.

The building is expected to be ready by mid-2020.
