KOTA TINGGI: Up to 93 illegal immigrants were arrested here over the weekend in a two-day integrated operation launched in response to a rise in crime and undesirable activities in the state.

District police chief Superintendent Ahsmon Bajah said the operation utilised the National Blue Ocean Strategy and involved 59 members of the police, the Immigration Department and the Customs Department.

The operation was carried out in numerous locations, including Desaru, Bandar Penawar, Rengit and Pengerang.

“We held this operation after receiving (reports of an) increase in cases of crime, violence and social problems in Bandar Penawar.

“According to statistics, crime (not including social problems) has spiked by 60.8 per cent since the beginning of the year, compared to the same time last year,” Ahsmon said.

He said the illegal immigrants will be investigated under the Immigration Act 1950/1963.

Apart from the arrests, 150 packets of contraband cigarettes were also seized.
